Oscars 2015: The Academy’s picks for best costume design

They made the past come alive. From the pre-Civil War era to the glitz and glam of the 1970s, this year’s Academy Award nominees for Best Costume Design were all recognized for their work on period films. The candidates remind us that costumes matter so much in movies, especially when it comes to establishing a sense of place — a believable new reality for moviegoers. The News sewed up time with the nominated designers to look at how the sketches measure up to the finished product on-screen.

For the Witch’s costume worn by Meryl Streep, Atwood actually stitched tiny pieces of leather on to chiffon to give her wardrobe a cracked-bark texture. “When you work with an actress like Meryl, you collaborate on what she is actually going to be doing in the costume,” Atwood explains. “The movement is part of her character, and early on she knew that as the Witch she was going to be crouched down and have a stance that was almost like a spider.”
