If you just had Instagram to go by, you wouldn’t be wrong for assuming that Kim Zolciak-Biermann, Snooki and the eldest Kardashian sisters are the experts on waist-training techniques.
The Kardashians alone have posted selfie after selfie (after selfie!) of the waist-whittling contraption. But one person not jumping on the shaping bandwagon? The star who, at one time, achieved a 17-inch waist through corset training: Dita Von Teese.

The burlesque performer and new author of the book Your Beauty Mark tells HuffPost Live that she started waist training at the age of 18 in a series of corsets with professional guidance. So she says the Instagrams of the fad flooding your feed are “funny,” saying, it’s “like the blind leading the blind.”
“The people who actually know a lot about corsetry are not the ones who are publicly speaking about it,” she explains. “And I’m seeing some of the corsets they’re saying are waist shapers and I’m thinking, ‘That doesn’t work.’”
Her advice is to skip the stretchy materials that claim to make miracles happen and research real corset-makers who have been in the business for decades and decades to get the healthiest, most effective information.
“It seems to be a fast fix. And it is! If you put on a corset and pull the strings tight, you instantly have this silhouette. And it’s great, but it’s not going to modify your body if you’re not engaged in a serious [regimen] of it.”
We guess what she’s saying is, don’t hold your breath (ha, ha) for a waist-training selfie from her anytime soon.
