For those who don’t know, the day was founded by Gwendolyn Ann Smith in 1999 following the brutal murder of Rita Hester a year earlier. Rita, a well-known transgender woman, was viciously stabbed in Boston by two unknown assailants shortly after leaving a bar. Hester’s family believe the assault was a hate crime because no jewelry or other personal belongings were stolen.
To combat future trans crimes like Rita’s, Cait and Chandi drafted up a simple message, saying:
“No one should be killed simply because they are transgender.”
