AMAS 2015: the big winners
Singer Ariana Grande accepts Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist award onstage during the 2015 American Music Awards.
The star-studded AMA, hosted by Jennifer Lopez and held Sunday night at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, honored some of the biggest names in music.
Here is a roundup of the night’s biggest winners:
Nobody can “drag down” everyone’s favorite Tween group, One Direction. The group won the first award of the night: favorite pop rock duo or group. The also took home Artist of the Year, beating out Taylor Swift, who led with six nominations. She shockingly didn’t win one award for her album “1985.”
Even Ariana Grande seemed taken aback when she beat out Swift (and Meghan Trainor) when she won in the Best Female Pop/Rock category.
Rapper Nicki Minaj accepts Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album award for “The Pinkprint” onstage during the 2015 American Music Awards.
Before accepting her award, the single gal, who split from rapper Big Sean in April, got a big kiss and hug from “Nonna” aka her grandmother.
“Can’t Feel My Face” crooner The Weeknd won for Favorite Soul/R&B Album.
He accepted his award from the legendary Prince and thanked his fans and mom.
One Direction accepts the award for Best Duo or Group.
Nicki Minaj called her “The Pinkprint” the “hardest album” she ever made, but looks as if that hard work paid off.
The “Anaconda” singer took home the award for “Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album.”
Her cryptic message to fans: “Find your voice and find your purpose before it’s too late.” She also won the award for Best Rap/Hip Hop artist.
Prince presents The Weeknd with the award for Favorite Soul/R&B album.
New kid on the block, Sam Hunt won “New Artist of the Year.” Hunt said he was “represent country music” and thanked his hometown of Nashville.
Not surprisingly, Justin Bieber, Skrillex, and Diplo took home the award for Best Collaboration for “Where Are You Now.”
Diplo called his collab with the Biebs “one of the strangest” things he’s worked on, but sometimes weird works.
